Urge Governor Murphy to Sign Renter Assistance Bill
May 15, 2020 Posted inThe Assembly and the Senate have unanimously passed a bill that creates the “2020 New Jersey Emergency Rental Assistance Program.” The bill is entitled S-2332/A-3956. Our office previously posted a blog about the date that this was passed unanimously in the Assembly and Senate, as it was a large calendar for the Legislature filled with COVID-19 related bills. You can read our prior blog below:
The bill provides $100,000,000.00 of relief funds to the DCA for distribution to residents in need of rental assistance. The program created by the bill would pay certain amounts of rent for tenants who:
- are at least thirty (30) days past due on a rent payment;
- are unable to pay rent without assistance; and
- have suffered a demonstrable loss in come due to the ongoing COVID 19 crisis.
The goal of the legislation is to assist those who are really in need and have suffered actual loss from the COVID-19 pandemic.
This bill was passed on April 13, 2020, but has yet to be enacted by the Governor. The bill remains on his desk for signature. The Governor could, at any time, sign this bill approving the Legislation. We urge you to write to the Governor to encourage him to sign this bill. The New Jersey Apartment Association has set up a method by which you can quickly send a message to the Governor. Please review this information below and send your support for this bill.
