New York COVID Rent Relief Program
July 20, 2020 Posted inNew York has recently launched a COVID Rent Relief Program available to tenants who meet certain criteria. If a tenant is eligible, their landlord will receive the funds directly.
Households must meet the following criteria to be considered eligible: (1) household income must have been below 80% of the area median income, adjusted for household size (before March 1, 2020, and at the time of the application); (2) household must have been paying more than 30% of gross monthly income toward rent (before March 1, 2020 and at the time of application); and (3) eligible applicants must have suffered from loss of income the period of April 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020.
In order to determine your county’s area median income, visit www.hcr.ny.gov/eligible-income-limits-80-ami-county. Make sure you search with the appropriate household size. The second requirement regarding gross income should include, but is not limited to, the following: (1) wages, (2) cash grants, (3) child support, social security, and (4) unemployment benefits.
